ABCs of a Safe Summer

Volunteer Opportunities

Blood Center and Bloodmobiles
Assist in registering blood donors, serving refreshments, and monitoring donors. Work at the blood center in Long Beach or on bloodmobiles in the community. This is a good assignment for people who like to work closely with others. Flexible schedule, primarily daytime hours. Apply Now

Community Disaster Education
Promote individual and family preparedness by staffing booths at community events, or speaking to community groups. Speaking engagements use audio-visual equipment. Training is provided. Flexible hours, primarily daytime and weekends. Apply Now

Disaster Action Team
Provide emergency assistance to families who are displaced by small local disasters like home fires. Using pre-arranged chapter resources, provide overnight lodging and food. Teams are on-call for one week at a time, covering evenings and weekends. Daytime teams are also available. Apply Now

Disaster Relief Operations
Assist at larger local disasters where emergency shelters are set up in community facilities. Many different assignments are available, such as shelter operations, feeding, damage assessment, gathering and moving supplies, collaborating with government and other agencies, and public information. About 12 hours of training is required to get started. Training is provided at the Red Cross chapter. Apply Now

Health and Safety
Instruct, or assist, classes in first aid, CPR, water safety, and other health related topics. Volunteers must first take the classes they want to teach, then go through a teacher certification process. Classes are taught days, evenings, and weekends. Apply Now

Disaster Mental Health
Licensed mental health professionals provide support, screening and crisis counseling to disaster clients and workers. Some work can be done by telephone. A current license in social work, psychiatry, psychology, or marriage and family counseling is required. Local or out-of-state opportunities during disaster relief operations. Apply Now

Assist with flu clinics, mobile nurse program, and health fairs, or become a Disaster Health Services volunteer and assist with health needs of those affected by disasters. A current license as an RN, LVN, or EMT is required. Apply Now

Office Assistance
Do in-office clerical, telephone, filing, or data entry work. Assist with bulk mailings for special events. Flexible daytime hours. Prior office experience is preferred and computer skills are helpful. Apply Now

Response Center Network (call agents)
Using online resource data, assist disaster clients throughout the country with available resources such as locations of shelter, feeding sites, health services, and other community resources. Must be able to do computer searches and enter information online while talking on the telephone. Good listening skills are essential. Training and supervision is provided. Apply Now

Speaker’s Bureau
Learn about Red Cross and help us tell the public about the services we provide. Speak at luncheon meetings, churches, businesses and city meetings. May also make presentations about family or business disaster preparedness. Must be able to spend some time attending classes and participating in events to learn about the Red Cross. Apply Now

VA Hospital
American Red Cross volunteers provide service to hospitalized veterans at the Long Beach Veteran’s Administration Hospital. Do non-medical tasks such as menu planning, shopping, letter writing, and delivering donated items. Red Cross volunteers work at the hospital Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. Apply Now

Youth Activities
Youth ages 14 – 18 are involved in a variety of activities related to the Red Cross mission. Activities include working with disaster services, assisting at blood drives, designing fund raising activities to support international efforts to eradicate malaria, and learning how international humanitarian law relates to non-violence in our own communities. Youth Advisor
Adult volunteers assist the youth program with special projects, such as Safe Kids training, disaster puppet shows, evening youth events at the chapter, a holiday project that serves low income families, and a summer Leadership Development Camp. Apply Now
